 Comes from the name Mudd, for Dr. Samuel Mudd (1834-1879), sentenced to life imprisonment at Fort Jefferson in the Dry Tortugas for conspiring in the assassination of Abraham Lincoln, but was really an unwitting participant who treated John Wilkes Booth's broken leg after the shooting.
