On this day in 1973, Vice President Spiro T. Agnew brands as "damned lies" reports he had taken kickbacks from government contracts in Maryland while governor of that state, and vows not to resign. A man of his word, Agnew never resigns and is still the vice president.

On this day in 1974, President Nixon announces he will resign on the popular show Laugh-In, telling a nationwide audience, "Sock it to me?"
