On this day in 1215, King John puts his seal to the Magna Carta ("the Great Charter") at Runnymede, England, granting his barons more liberty, and buying himself valuable time.

On this day in 1992, Vice President Dan Quayle, relying on a faulty flash card, erroneously instructs a Trenton, N.J., elementary school student to spell "potato" as "potatoe" during a spelling bee. Later, the young student spells the word "doofus" correctly.
