On this day in 1868, Christopher Latham Sholes receives a patent for an invention he calls a "Type-Writer." It will become a popular mechanical device used to turn out putrid first novels.

On this day in 1972, as heard on a tape of this discussion, President Nixon and his chief of staff H.R. Haldeman hatch a plan to use the CIA to resurrect Nixon's reputation after he's forced to resign following the revelation of the existence of this tape. (see "The New Nixon Tapes")
