On this day in 1938, the radio play The War of the Worlds, starring Orson Welles, airs on CBS radio at the same time as Martians attack New Jersey. Some people, mistaking the Martian attack for the Welles broadcast, hide in the woods and stay there for up to three weeks.

On this day in 1961, the Soviet Party Congress unanimously approves a resolution ordering the removal of Josef Stalin's body from Lenin's tomb (see below). "When he's dead, we'll put him in there," announces Soviet Foreign Minister Andrei Gromyko.
