EXT. GERMANY - BLACK FOREST - DAY (1933) - ESTABLISHING

the beautiful scenery and then, after a beat, Madden and the rest blast through the scenery, a la the old beer commercials, and roll, paratrooper style, onto the ground.

MADDEN

Welcome to Germany, boys. It's going to rain later, so let's move it.

THE FRIDGE
Hey, Coach -- I mean Captain Blenheim -- I'm hungry.

BUBBA
Yeah, me too.

BUTKUS
Now that you mention it, I could eat.

MADDEN
Okay, okay, there'll be plenty of time to eat -- first let's find the dirt road. Zonk, you got the compass?

CSONKA
Yeah, Coach.

Csonka hands Madden a compass. Madden studies it.

MADDEN
It's this way.

They follow Madden as he heads off and we
DISSOLVE TO:

EXT. DIRT ROAD - A LITTLE LATER - THE TEAM

emerges from the woods.

MADDEN

This is it, guys. The dirt road.

BUBBA
Hey look.

He points to O.S.

CLOSE SHOT - SIGN

It reads, with appropriate directional arrows, "HAMBURG" and "FRANKFURT."

MED. SHOT - THE TEAM

reacts favorably.

BUBBA

I could eat a hundred hot dogs.

THE FRIDGE
Not me, man. Burgers.

MADDEN
All right, let's get goin'. Bubba and me have to meet a train. You guys know what to do. According to the playbook we'll see you tonight at the Leipzig Zeppelin Base. It is now ten fifteen. Synchronize your watches.

They look at their watches.

MADDEN
(continuing)
Good luck.

They bang fists and split up.

EXT. ROAD - A LITTLE LATER - BUTKUS AND CSONKA

are walking, carefully, into the outskirts of a small German town.

BUTKUS

So, I think I like burgers and hot dogs just about the same. I mean, especially if they're prepared properly, outdoors, on a barbecue.

CSONKA
(sarcastically)
Like that one that uses only two pieces of newspaper?

BUTKUS
You can laugh, but it really works.

CSONKA
You mean you're gonna tell me that cooking a hamburger with the newsprint from a daily newspaper is okay to do?

BUTKUS
Wait'll we get into town. I'll give you a demonstration.

Butkus reveals he's taken along his portable barbecue device.

BUTKUS
(continuing)
All I need is some fresh ground beef, or some pork chops, or a nice porterhouse steak, and you'll see.

CUT TO:

EXT. ROAD - MADDEN AND BUBBA

are walking, and talking.

MADDEN

Hey, Bubba, do you remember a halfback named Nolan "The Flea" Smith?

BUBBA
Sure. Kansas City. Punt returner.

MADDEN
Man, could he run.

BUBBA
You can say that again. Whatever happened to him?

MADDEN
I don't know. I think he played in Canada for a couple of years. Man, could he run.

BUBBA
Why'd you bring it up, Coach -- I mean -- Captain Blenheim?

MADDEN
I don't know.

They keep walking for a few beats.
CUT TO:

INT. LAB - THE SCIENTISTS

are congratulating themselves, and, save for Denton, drinking champagne, and feeling its effects.

SASHIMI

Doctor Denton, I may have criticized you in the past, but I take it all back, you're a brilliant young man, wise beyond your nine years.

DENTON
Thanks, Doctor Sashimi. Say, do we have any apple juice?

TWO SHOT - BRICKHOUSE AND MELLINGER

BRICKHOUSE
(suggestively)

Doctor, I feel so -- helpless.

MELLINGER
(not catching her pass)
I know what you mean. It's out of our hands now. It's all up to...
(referring to tube)
... them.

The phone RINGS. Sashimi picks it up.

SASHIMI
Hello? It is? Yes, put him on --
(cups mouthpiece)
It's the President. I'll put it on the speakerphone.

They lean in to listen, giving Dr. Brickhouse an opportunity to nibble on Dr. Mellinger's ear.

PRESIDENT'S VOICE (V.O.)
Doctor Sashimi... you, and Doctor Brickhouse, and Doctor Denton, and Doctor Mellinger -- and I guess I should include Doctor Julius as well -- have all made a tremendous contribution to your country, and I just want to say thank you, on behalf of not just me, and my family, and my cat, but for all Americans, especially those who appreciate history, and how important it is to preserve it as close to its original condition as possible. Thank you... If you want to hear this message again, press "pound." If you want to leave a message, press "star." If you want to record your own --

Sashimi hangs up.

SASHIMI
A tape.

BRICKHOUSE
He was starting to sound like Doctor Julius.

MELLINGER
Say, where is Doctor Julius? I haven't seen him for awhile.

EXT. BERLIN - DAY (1933) - ESTABLISHING

a city on the brink.

EXT. BUSY CITY STREET - THE FRIDGE

is trying to get a cab, as many drive right by him.

MED. SHOT - A TAXI

pulls up in front of The Fridge, but -- just as he tries to get in -- Doctor Julius appears and beats him to it, slams the door, and the cab pulls away without him.

THE FRIDGE

Hey, he looked familiar.
