EXT. BASE OF EIFFEL TOWER - DAY (1933) - MADDEN
is the first to the appointed meeting place, not counting Heinz and Stimmel lurking in the b.g.
MADDEN
Well, it's eight fifty-two. I hope these guys get here in time. Miss this bus and you really miss the bus. |
Nervously he taps his foot, whistles, tries to be inconspicuous, when a bus pulls up.
ANGLE - THE BUS
is being driven by Summerall.
SUMMERALL
MADDEN
They'll be here. They better be. |
CSONKA, BUBBA, AND BUTKUS
appear.
BUTKUS
CSONKA
Had to sleep on the floor of the museum. |
BUTKUS
MADDEN
Well, get on the bus. It's a long ride, you can catch some shut-eye. |
They start to board.
CSONKA
Bubba should be on Jeopardy, Coach. He sure knows his art. |
BUTKUS
BUBBA
Oh, I'm strong in the Impressionists, but I don't know diddly about the Tang Dynasty or Dutch Realism. |
The Boz appears, a hung-over Einstein slung over his shoulders like a sack of potatoes.
MADDEN
Great. Now that only leaves The Fridge. How are you feeling, Professor Einstein? |
EINSTEIN
(groggy)
Madden does a take as Einstein and The Boz step onto the bus.
MADDEN
Come on, Fridge, come on. We can't leave you here, in nineteen thirty-three... |
(checks watch)
... It's eight fifty-nine. |
THE FRIDGE (O.S.)
Madden looks O.S.
THE FRIDGE
approaches, holding a large cup of French fries.
THE FRIDGE
(continuing)
I finally found a place that sold French fries -- I couldn't believe it! |
MADDEN
Come on, Fridge, all aboard, we're headed for the coast. |
ANGLE - HEINZ AND STIMMEL
can be seen listening closely.
MADDEN
(continuing)
It's on to the port of Cherbourg. |
Heinz and Stimmel are happy to hear that bit of information as we
EXT. PORT OF CHERBOURG - DAY (1933) - ESTABLISHING
WIDE SHOT - S.S. EUROPA - PASSENGERS
board what was, at the time, "The World's Fastest Ocean Liner."
CLOSER - THE BUS
pulls up in the foreground.
INT. BUS - SUMMERALL
addresses the troops, who are all asleep, draped across the seats.
SUMMERALL
They start waking up.
MADDEN
BUTKUS
MADDEN
Let's check the playbook. |
They all take out playbooks, except Einstein.
BUBBA
(to Einstein)
Here, you can look at mine. |
MADDEN
Page seventy-five, guys, at the bottom. |
They turn to the proper page.
MADDEN
(continuing)
(reading)
"At three-fifteen in the afternoon on September the Second everyone will proceed to the port of Cherbourg and board the ocean liner Europa under aliases provided for you on the next page." |
They all turn the page and tear off attached passports.
CSONKA
MADDEN
(reading)
"It is important that Professor Einstein be protected, because Nazi spies are watching your every move." |
(to team)
Guys, those are our marching orders. Zonk -- you got the papers? |
Csonka holds up the boxes filled with Einstein's important papers.
MADDEN
(continuing)
They start getting off the bus, all but Summerall.
MADDEN
(to Summerall)
Let's go, Pat. Aren't you coming? |
SUMMERALL
Actually, no, John. I'm staying. I like it here. |
MADDEN
You're staying in France? In nineteen thirty-three? |
SUMMERALL
MADDEN
But, but -- what about next season? The Dallas-San Francisco matchup in week three? Your Fox contract? |
SUMMERALL
I don't need it. I've found the place for me. Paris. This is it. I'm happy. I'm staying. |
MADDEN
(stunned; beat)
Well, okay. If it makes you happy, buddy, but I'm gonna miss you. |
SUMMERALL
Same here, comrade. But I've made up my mind. |
MADDEN
Then so be it. Good luck, my friend. |
Madden steps off the bus and waves farewell to his pal as we
